The interior jungles of Africa and South America are mostly dark. ![]() Some regions remain thinly populated and unlit. The Nile River, from the Aswan Dam to the Mediterranean Sea, is another bright thread through an otherwise dark region. In Russia, the Trans-Siberian railroad is a thin line stretching from Moscow through the center of Asia to Vladivostok. The United States interstate highway system appears as a lattice connecting the brighter dots of city centers. Cities tend to grow along coastlines and transportation networks. The brightest areas of the Earth are the most urbanized, but not necessarily the most populated (compare western Europe with China and India). “Nothing tells us more about the spread of humans across the earth than city lights,” Chris Elvidge, a NOAA scientist, said in the release. The Night Earth map shows the lights that are visible at night on the Earth's surface. Since the launch of the satellite, researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA have committed to capturing images of the earth each night to document the human footprint and where it leads. For example, VIIRS was able to detect power outages in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, which struck the Caribbean and the southern United States in September 2016. The satellite launched in October 2011 also carries a Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which can observe dim light down to the scale of an isolated highway lamp or fishing boat, which is particularly useful for weather forecasting. According to a press release, NPP is equipped with a low-light sensor that distinguishes night lights with six times better spatial resolution and 250 times better resolution of lighting levels (dynamic range) than before. ![]()
